10 Houthi fighters killed in US drone strikes in Yemen: Government sources

Sana, 13 November (IANS). At least 10 Houthi rebels were killed in two separate US drone strikes in Yemen’s central al-Bayda province. A military source of the Yemen government gave this information to the media.

The attacks targeted mobile rocket launchers in As-Soumah and Dhi-Naim districts, the source said on Tuesday, speaking on condition of anonymity.

According to Xinhua news agency, local residents said on social media that the Houthi group surrounded the targeted vehicle and blocked the roads leading to the scene.

Al-Masirah TV, run by the Houthi group, also reported two strikes by ‘American drones’ but gave no further details. The Houthi group rarely provides information about its casualties or damage.

Also on Tuesday, the US Central Command posted on social media platform X. It said aircraft from the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) support operations against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in the US Central Command area of responsibility. A video was also shared in which warplanes were shown taking off from an aircraft carrier.

Al-Masirah TV reported several air strikes by US-British coalition warplanes in the capital Sanaa as well as Amran and Saada provinces over the past three days.

Yemen has been embroiled in civil war since late 2014 when the Houthi group captured several northern provinces. Because of this, the internationally recognized Yemen government had to leave Sanaa.

Since last November, the Houthi group has been launching rocket and drone attacks on Israel and also targeting ‘Israeli-linked’ shipping in the Red Sea. It claims that these actions are to show solidarity towards the Palestinians in Gaza amid the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In response, the US-led naval coalition deployed in the Red Sea has launched regular strikes against Houthi targets since January to prevent the Houthi group from disrupting international shipping lanes.
