New Delhi, November 26 (IANS). Exactly 16 years ago, in the year 2008, an incident happened in Mumbai which shook the entire country. This day is remembered as one of the biggest terrorism attacks in India, known as 26/11. These attacks terrorized Mumbai for 59 hours and the incidents that took place during these 59 hours shocked the entire country.

In fact, on 26 November 2008, 10 terrorists from Pakistan entered Mumbai by sea route. These terrorists had planned to attack major places of Mumbai via sea. They targeted crowded areas. In the dark of night, these terrorists entered Taj Hotel, Oberoi Trident Hotel, CST Railway Station and Nariman House near Colaba area of ​​Mumbai through a boat.

Terrorists first captured the Taj Hotel and Oberoi Trident Hotel in Mumbai, where they took hotel staff and guests hostage. After this, they started indiscriminate firing at CST railway station in Colaba area, killing many innocents. Meanwhile, terrorists also entered Nariman House and took many people hostage. The purpose of these attacks by terrorists was to spread terror in crowded places, the terrorists were fully trained. Along with targeting common citizens, he was also making foreign citizens his victims.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Police, NSG (National Security Guard), NCTC and other security agencies came together and started fighting the terrorists. Brave Mumbai Police personnel like Hemant Karkare, Vijay Salaskar and Ashok Kamte were martyred in this attack. NSG’s special commando team launched operations against the attackers at hotels and other locations. A total of 9 terrorists were killed in this operation and one terrorist Ajmal Kasab was captured alive. Kasab was produced before the court after being caught by the Mumbai Police and he was hanged in 2012.

According to statistics, 164 people were killed in this attack, while more than 300 people were injured. Apart from Indian citizens, many foreign citizens were also among those killed. After this attack, India further tightened its policy against terrorism. The Mumbai attacks made the country realize the need to unite against terrorism. India tried to create international pressure against terrorism and demanded action against many terrorists.

Since then, every year on 26 November, tributes are paid to the martyrs of the Mumbai attacks. This day is celebrated to commemorate the fight against terrorism and salute the martyrdom of those brave people who tried to stop this attack by sacrificing their lives.
