Khartoum, Dec 11 (IANS): At least 65 civilians were killed in an attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the city of Omdurman, north of Sudan’s capital Khartoum.
Khartoum state press office said in a statement, “The terrorist militia today (Tuesday) targeted civilians in the Karari area with artillery fire, carrying out the biggest human massacre, killing more than 65 people and wounding hundreds of others.” “
Khartoum state Governor Ahmed Osman Hamzah visited targeted areas, including a bus station in the Karari area in northern Omdurman, where 22 people were killed in shelling on a passenger bus, the statement said, according to Xinhua news agency.
The remaining victims were killed in shelling that targeted a market and a health center near the bus station, according to the statement.
The governor condemned the RSF for targeting unarmed civilians, saying that “the purpose of this attack is to terrorize civilians and scare them into leaving safe areas.” He appealed to the international community and organizations to fulfill their responsibilities in protecting civilians.
RSF has not yet commented on this incident.
Sudan has been in the grip of a devastating conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF since mid-April 2023.
According to international organizations’ estimates, the deadly conflict has resulted in the deaths of more than 27,120 people and displaced more than 14 million people inside or outside Sudan.
