Here you can see a 2340 year old mummy of a woman who is in the headlines these days. Recently Egyptian experts were called to investigate the condition of this mummy. According to information received from the Albert Museum, this mummy was found during excavation in the old city of Panopolis in Egypt. The name of the woman to whom this mummy belongs is ‘Tutu’. It is said that at that time a god named Khem was worshiped in Egypt. This woman was a member of a family of priests of the same deity.

The British government brought the woman’s mummy to India from Egypt in the year 1880. Since then it has been preserved in the Albert Museum, Jaipur. Hundreds of tourists come every year to see this mummy. There are also a good number of foreign tourists among them. If you are thinking that you can see mummies only in Albert Museum of Jaipur, then you will be happy to know that mummies are kept in museums of 6 cities of the country including Jaipur. These are Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Vadodara Museum of Gujarat. The mummy of Vadodara Museum was purchased by Maharaja of Vadodara Sayajirao Gaekwad III and kept in the museum. This mummy is of a 20 year old girl belonging to the Egyptian royal family.

Cairo’s experts take care of these mummies
These mummies are cared for under the guidance of experts from the Cairo Museum, who look after the Egyptian pyramids. This time, a team of three members from Egypt, along with the team from the Chemistry Department, examined the mummy kept in the Albert Museum for about two and a half hours. Even today the mummy’s body looks the same as if this woman had died just a short time ago.

When the sale of mummies started
Although the tradition of making mummies had ended, the mummies had accumulated in such large numbers that it was not easy to handle them. Therefore the sale of mummies started in the 19th century. During this time, the trend of buying mummies started increasing among the rich people of Asia. These people used to buy mummies with great enthusiasm and brought them directly among the people.
