Importance of Chhoti Diwali
Chhoti Diwali is also known as Narak Chaturdashi. It is believed that by worshiping Yama on this day, a person can be saved from untimely death. Besides, it is also a way to avoid going to hell after death. It is said that worshiping Lord Krishna after taking bath in the morning on this day brings beauty. According to another belief, Ram devotee Hanuman was born on this day from the womb of Mother Anjana. Therefore this day is also celebrated as Hanuman Jayanti.
Why is Narak Chaturdashi called Chhoti Diwali?
The festival of Chhoti Diwali is celebrated on the next day of Dhanteras. It is the second day of the five-day festival and Deepotsav is celebrated on the next day. According to the Hindu calendar, the festival of Narak Chaturdashi is celebrated on the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. Actually, Narak Chaturdashi is called Chhoti Diwali because it is celebrated a day before Diwali. Even on this day, lamps are lit in the house. There is a tradition of lighting mainly 14 lamps on this day.
Narak Chaturdashi is also known by names like Yama Chaturdashi, Roop Chaturdashi or Roop Chaudas. Apart from this it is also known as Narak Chaudas and Narak Puja. Although it is celebrated as Chhoti Diwali. On this special day, Yamraj is worshiped and a fast is observed.
