Dausa : 5 year old child Aryan, trapped in a borewell in Kalikhad village of Dausa district of Rajasthan, died. He remained trapped in the borewell for three days. He was pulled out after 57 hours of strenuous efforts at around 11:45 pm on Wednesday night. Aryan was immediately taken to the hospital in an ambulance with advanced life support system, but the doctors declared him dead. The NDRF team pulled out the child using an umbrella, a ring and a rod tied to a rope.
When taken out of the borewell, Aryan was unconscious and was also hungry and thirsty for three days. Doctor Deepak Sharma of Dausa District Hospital said that ECG and other tests were done after bringing the child to the hospital, but he had already died. This incident was very sad for the villagers and the rescue team. In the end, the same Jugaad ring method which had started this operation was used to get Aryan out. But Aryan’s death left many questions on the working of the government, administration and NDRF.
The most important thing in this entire operation was time. As time was passing, Aryan’s movements were stopping. Aryan was moving a bit for 10 hours after falling in the borewell, but at 1 o’clock on Tuesday, Dausa Collector said that no contact could be made with Aryan.
Keep digging pits, keep breathing
The SDRF team started digging a pit near the borewell about four hours after the accident. That same day, a 70 feet pit was dug by night. Till that time, no benefit was seen from the pit dug like a slope. Many JCB machines were installed. The one among the villagers who had a tractor brought it. Soil was brought away from the mouth of the pit. In his struggle to save Aryan, he did whatever he could. The villagers made a road by removing more than 10 thousand tonnes of soil in just a few hours.
NDRF made its first attempt at ‘desi jugaad’ after 10 hours.
At around 1 o’clock on Tuesday night, NDRF made a ring and an iron umbrella. There was hope that he would be put down. The child will get trapped in it and will be pulled out. But several attempts were made till the next day. According to the information, this was attempted about 6 times, but failed every time.
NDRF could not deliver food and water to the child
In this entire incident, the failure of the rescue workers to deliver food to Aryan was a big failure. Staying without food for 57 hours proved to be the biggest disaster for a 5 year old child. Aryan’s mother accused the rescue workers of negligence. Aryan’s father kept sitting outside the borewell with a milk bottle.
decision to build a tunnel
NDRF decided that now the borewell will be reached by making a route through the tunnel. About 27 hours after the accident, piling machines from Sawai Madhopur reached Kalikheda at 7 pm on Tuesday night and the next day at 5 am, the exercise of making a hole about 6 feet away from the borewell started. Holes were being drilled continuously with piling machines during the day on Wednesday. A hole more than 120 feet deep was also drilled. Preparations were being made to reach the borewell through ‘rat-hole mining’ technique. On Wednesday night, NDRF kept sending the umbrella-shaped wheel into the borewell again and again. Finally, around 11 o’clock in the night, Aryan got stuck in it and was pulled out. The question of time remained in this entire operation. The passage of each minute was increasing the distance between life and death for Aryan. People were also seen saying that if only the piling machines had arrived that night, Aryan could have been taken out in a few hours, perhaps if a method had been adopted, time could have been saved.
What did the Chief Medical Officer say?
Chief Medical Officer Deepak Sharma said that there are no injury marks on the child’s body and it seems that he might have hit some hard object after falling. The Chief Medical Officer said, “The child suffered a lot due to staying in such a borewell for a long time, due to which his condition became critical.” He said, “When the child was taken out of the borewell, everything was beyond expectations. He was also admitted to the hospital. But, when we did the ECG, it came to light that the child is now dead. Apart from this, he also faced problems due to living without food for a long time. At the same time, no injury marks of any kind were found on the body. But, it seems as if he might have hit some hard object after falling into the borewell.”
