AI-capable PC shipments increase globally in third quarter

New Delhi, November 14 (IANS). There has been a global increase in AI-capable PC shipments in the third quarter. According to a latest report, AI-capable PC shipments reached 13.3 million units in the quarter ended September, accounting for 20 percent of all PC shipments during the quarter.

A Canalys report said the sequential growth in this new category of PCs was 49 percent due to the increase in availability of AI-capable PCs.

For the first time, Windows devices had the highest share in AI-capable PC shipments, achieving 53 percent share.

The Windows 11 refresh cycle and processor roadmap also continued to get a boost, but winning customer confidence in on-device AI use will be important moving forward, the report said.

Ishan Dutt, principal analyst at Canalys, said AI-capable PC progress continued at a strong pace in the third quarter.

CoPilot Plus PCs with the Snapdragon X series maintained their availability in the third quarter, he said. While AMD purchased RYZEN AI 300 products. At the same time, Intel officially launched its Lunar Lake series.

“However, both x86 chipset vendors are still waiting for Microsoft to add CoPilot Plus PC support to their offerings, which is expected to arrive this month.”

Total Windows AI-capable PC shipments increased 93 percent sequentially, accounting for 12 percent of Windows PCs shipped in the third quarter.

At its “Imagine AI” event in September, HP highlighted its collaboration with ISVs and third-party developers for on-device AI experiences.

Meanwhile, for Lenovo, the company’s major focus in recent months has been property AI tools and agent embedded tools in PCs.

Canalys analyst Kieran Jessop said, “Apple has a different strategic approach in this scenario. It is leveraging its vertically integrated ecosystem to create features it doesn’t need to compete directly with Microsoft’s productivity tools.”

Jessop said Apple may instead focus on the hardware and OS levels, which could prove crucial for the company against Windows OEMs in an effort to gain market share.
