Ajmer: Crisis on free sanitary napkins, tussle between departments

Ajmer : Ajmer Rajasthan Medical Services Corporation Limited (RMSCL) has withdrawn from the purchase and distribution of sanitary napkins under the Udaan scheme of the government. In such a situation, a crisis has arisen in providing free sanitary napkins to 1 crore 22 lakh girl students and women. Sanitary napkins have not been able to reach schools, colleges and Anganwadi centers for the last two months. They are not being purchased under the scheme after September. In the first schedule of the scheme, RMSCL purchased and distributed sanitary napkins only for three months till April, May and June 2024. After this, its purchase and distribution has been refused from July to March next year – 2025. The Managing Director of RMSCL has written a letter to the Commissioner of Women Empowerment Department in this regard. In this, the department has been written to make arrangements for purchase and distribution of sanitary napkins at its level. At the same time, in October itself, the department has issued administrative and financial approval for Schedule II and III of the financial year 2024-25 and sent the demand to RMSCL.

State An annual budget of Rs 500 crore has been kept under the UDAN scheme to provide free sanitary napkins to girl students and women. The Women Empowerment Department gives about Rs 90 crore every three months to RMSCL for their purchase and distribution. However, before this it is necessary to take permission from the Finance Department. According to department officials, payments have been made till June.
