New Delhi, November 28 (IANS). Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel stopped an Amritdhari Sikh with a kirpan from entering a metro train at Jhilmil metro station in New Delhi. Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee Chairman Harmeet Singh Kalka has expressed objection to this. He has written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah in this regard.
In the letter, Harmeet Singh Kalka described the incident as “unfortunate” and said it was a clear violation of the fundamental rights of Amritdhari Sikhs. In Sikhism, it is mandatory for every Amritdhari Sikh to keep the Sikh religious items Kada, Kangha, Kirpan, Kashera and Kesh at all times.
He wrote, “This is not the first time in recent times that an Amritdhari Sikh traveler has been stopped. Indian law prohibits an Amritdhari Sikh from carrying a kirpan (with a blade longer than six inches and an overall length not exceeding nine inches).” This incident is a gross violation of the fundamental rights enshrined in Article 25 of the Indian Constitution which grants freedom of religion and belief to every citizen of the country.”
He said in the letter, “Keeping in mind the religious sentiments of the Sikhs, you are requested to order an investigation into the matter and punish the guilty CISF personnel as per the rules while respecting the religious freedom granted to every Indian by the Indian Constitution.” be punished.”
Earlier, Harmeet Singh Kalka had said in a post on social media platform Such actions are in blatant disregard of the constitutional rights guaranteed under Article 25 of the Indian Constitution, which protects the religious freedom of the Sikh community.”
He wrote in the post that this shows the lack of awareness and sensitivity among people towards Sikh cultural and religious practices. It is important that security protocols are designed to respect these freedoms, promoting inclusivity and understanding. Such incidents cannot be ignored or taken lightly.
