AMU students protest against FIR

Aligarh, 22 November (IANS). Angered by the filing of a case against students at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Uttar Pradesh, students protested on Friday.

On Thursday, students had demonstrated in front of the Vice Chancellor’s office demanding student union elections. During this, some students protested by standing on the car of the Vice Chancellor. In this case, an FIR was lodged against the protesting students. The university administration had suspended half a dozen students due to indiscipline. The police had registered a case against 12 named and unidentified students who vandalized the Vice Chancellor’s car during the protest. At present, for security reasons, a large number of police forces have been deployed outside the Aligarh Muslim University campus.

Aligarh Muslim University student leader Salman Gauri said that we are putting forth our demands against the ongoing dictatorship in the campus. We wanted to talk to the Vice Chancellor, which was not done. Due to this the matter escalated. The administration turned against us. Due to this an FIR was lodged against our colleagues. This attitude of the administration is not appropriate. Because all those against whom the case has been registered are students. My request to the administration is that first of all the FIR should be returned.

Gauri said, there are exams from Monday, the children who have been suspended should be reinstated, so that their studies can be carried forward. He said that dreaming is wrong. It is important to fulfill Sir Syed’s dream, even if there is a mistake, these students consider you like their father. There was no attack on the vehicle, this is wrong. Our demand is that a meeting should be organized with Vice Chancellor Sahiba. But we are being prevented from meeting. We have been getting assurances continuously for the past six days, but we are not getting the word out.

The student leader said, who is the Vice Chancellor for? If you don’t talk about our rights, then who will? Our demand is legitimate. There should be a student union. Why not reinstate the union? Our demand is that student union elections should be conducted. The FIR should be withdrawn.

Dr Wasim Ali Khan, Proctor of Aligarh Muslim University, said that the students had gone on Thursday with their demands. Two students had climbed on top of the Vice Chancellor’s car. Five students have been suspended. Many students were banned from the campus. Apart from this, FIR has been registered against the students who attacked.
