Located in the heart of India, Kota has emerged as a global education hub, renowned for its world-class coaching institutes. Beyond its academic proficiency, Kota offers a vibrant and culturally rich experience. Kota’s historical sites, natural beauty and local cuisine provide a perfect balance for students to relax and rejuvenate amidst their academic hustle. Kota, also known as the Education City, is situated on the banks of the Chambal River. This historic city was earlier known as Kotah. Famous as the education city and the business center of Hadoti, this city is the third largest city in Rajasthan after Jaipur and Jodhpur in terms of area and population with twelve million people. Known as the birthplace of Hada Rajputs, this city is spread over an area of about 222 square kilometers. Talking about the history of the city, Kota used to be a part of the Bundi princely state, which separated from Bundi in the middle of the 16th century and became an independent state.
Kota, once known as the industrial city of Rajasthan, is now known as the coaching city of Kota not only in India but all over the world. Chambal, which flows in the opposite direction, i.e. from south to north, is the lifeline of this place. Kota is the only city in the country where there is a water, nuclear gas and coal-based power generation centre. There are many coaching institutes in Kota which prepare students for engineering and medical entrance exams, due to which this city is also called an ‘education hub’. Every year lakhs of children come here to prepare for entrance exams. With the huge number of children, the coaching business in Kota has also reached Rs 6 thousand crore and is increasing day by day. The entire economy of Kota city is now dependent on these coaching institutes. Along with this, due to the effect of Kota stone and Chambal water, the coaching business has also given a boost to the real estate business in Kota during the last two decades.
The journey of Kota city to become a coaching hub started when VK Bansal, an engineer by profession, left his job at JK Synthetics in Kota in 1985 and started teaching students at his home. Along with teaching mathematics, he also advised students to pass engineering entrance exams. Year after year, the number of his students getting selected increased, after which he established Bansal Institute. According to media reports, till 1991, there were only a few coaching classes in Kota. But during this time, 10 students of a coaching institute got selected in IIT. After this, the next year 50 students were selected in IIT and after this the caravan started moving in the same way. Although there are many coaching centers in Kota, but some institutes have gained more fame.
Before proceeding further in the video, let us also know about some of the most famous coaching institutes of Kota, their courses and fees. There are hundreds of coaching centers for IIT, JEE and Triple preparation in Kota, which are mainly spread in Talmandi, Vigyan Nagar, Jawahar Nagar, Mahavir Nagar, Indraprastha Industrial Area and Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, known as the new part of the city. Bansal Classes is considered to be the oldest and trusted coaching center of Kota, which mainly provides coaching for IIT, JEE and NEET. Apart from this, the biggest coaching center here on the basis of students is Allen Institute, which mainly prepares for IIT, JEE and NEET, for the preparation of both types of entrance exams in Allen, a fee of about 1 to 2 lakh rupees has to be paid. Career Point is also a famous name in the list of IIT JEE coaching institutes in Kota. At the same time, Aakash Institute is also very famous for its NEET preparation in the whole country along with Kota. Resonance, which prepares students for competitive exams like NEET, JEE and CLAT, is also considered very important on the basis of selection across the country. In all these coaching institutes, students have to pay a fee of around two to two lakhs.
Every year around 2,50,000 students come to Kota to prepare for competitive exams in different fields. Seeing the huge number of students in the city, some national level coaching institutes have also opened their centers in Kota, these coaching institutes mainly include Unacademy, Physics Wala, Narayana and Vedantu etc. for the preparation of NEET and JEE exams. There are about 10 thousand hostels, more than 2,500 PGs and about 1,800 messes, cafes, tiffin centers, breakfast stalls etc. PG and room are available at low cost within 3 kilometers of the coaching area. Where room rent and food are available for ₹10000. Apart from this, there are many budget friendly messes, where you can eat for 1 month for ₹2500 to ₹3000. Apart from this, you can also order tiffin in your room. In these messes, children are also given special food for 3 days.
Kota is connected to every means of transport due to students coming from every part of the country, but the biggest obstacle in the development and completeness of Kota is the lack of air services here. Despite having an aerodrome airport here, everyone is troubled by the lack of air service in Kota. Talking about road routes, Kota is well connected to all the main highways of the country. Apart from this, Kota is also connected to every part of the railway route of Indian Railways, from here you will get regular trains to Delhi, Mumbai, Kerala, Jammu, Bangalore and all the major cities of the country.
This Kota city, which is called an education hub, also has a dark chapter, knowing about which everyone’s face shivers. Kota city is also becoming a hub of student deaths, every year students commit suicide due to stress here. The pressure of coaching institutes on students is heavy, because it is not necessary that every student is mentally strong. The figures of student suicides in Kota have shaken the administration. Classes in coaching institutes from six in the morning to late evening, then self-study at night, tests once or twice a week, expectations of parents and pressure of competition with peers make students take steps like suicide. The figures of the last few years are shocking. In the year 2023, a total of 29 students committed suicide. At the same time, 14 students have given up their lives so far this year. The cases of student suicides in Kota have also disturbed the sleep of the governments.
Rajasthan government, Kota administration and coaching institutes have made several efforts to reduce stress of students. Many means of entertainment have been arranged for students in Kota, these include Chambal Garden, Seven Wonders Park, Kishore Sagar, Nagaji Ka Bagh, Water Screen Fountain, Joy Train, Ghatotkach Circle, Mukundra National Park, many archaeological and tourist places, malls and chopties.
