Dhaka, November 17 (IANS). The interim government of Bangladesh has extended the magisterial power given to commissioned army officers by two months.
An official notification published by the Ministry of Public Administration on Saturday said their jurisdiction to exercise magisterial power will cover the entire Bangladesh.
According to the report of news agency Xinhua, the ministry issued a circular in this regard on Friday, which states that Bangladesh Coast Guard and Border Guard officers posted on deputation to Bangladesh will also be able to exercise magisterial power.
Earlier on September 17, the interim government had granted executive magistrate powers to commissioned officers of the Army for 60 days.
An officer with magisterial power can arrest a person and send him to jail. The officer can also open fire in self-defense.
Later on September 29, the government also granted executive magistrate powers to commissioned officers of the Air Force and Navy to help maintain law and order.
It is noteworthy that on August 5, the then Sheikh Hasina government was overthrown. Three days later, on August 8, an interim government was formed under the leadership of Mohammad Yunus. Despite the formation of the interim government, army personnel are deployed across the country to deal firmly with the chaotic situation.
