Bangladesh government calls ISKCON a fundamentalist organization

New Delhi, November 27 (IANS). The Bangladesh government on Wednesday described ISKCON as a fundamentalist religious organization in the High Court.

Bangladeshi media reported that during the hearing of a writ petition, the court asked Attorney General Mohammad Asaduzzaman, representing the government, about ISKCON. On this he said, “It is a religious fundamentalist organization. The government is investigating it.”

The situation in Bangladesh has become tense after the arrest of ISKCON’s Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu. On Tuesday, a lawyer was also killed by the mob after his bail plea was rejected.

According to Bangladesh newspaper ‘Daily Star’, the bench of High Court Justice Farah Mehboob and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury, while hearing the petition of Supreme Court lawyer Moniruzzaman, had asked the government to stop the ISKCON rallies and Chittagong Tuesday. What action is being taken regarding his recent activities including the incident. The court has ordered the Attorney General to give information about the government’s steps on Thursday.

The petition demanded banning of ISKCON in Bangladesh.

The Attorney General told the High Court that some forces are trying to destabilize the country. The court expressed concern over the situation.

According to Somoy News, the Attorney General told the court that the government has started discussing the issue with all political parties.

Chinmoy Krishna Das is the head of ISKCON Pundarik Dham in Chittagong, Bangladesh. He was detained by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on 25 November at 4:30 pm. On Tuesday, he was produced before Chittagong’s sixth metropolitan magistrate Kazi Shariful Islam amid tight security. The magistrate rejected his bail plea and he was sent to jail. According to media reports, he has been accused of treason.

After the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, massive protests started in Bangladesh. To stop this demonstration, tear gas shells were fired on a large scale and lathicharge was also done, in which more than 50 people were injured. The seriously injured have been admitted to the hospital.

India has reacted strongly to his arrest and has appealed to the interim government of Bangladesh to ensure the safety of all minorities including Hindus there.
