Beijing on US arms sales to Taiwan

Beijing, December 1 (IANS). China on Sunday criticized America’s military assistance to Taiwan.

According to Xinhua news agency, Chen Binhua, spokesman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made this comment.

The reaction came after the US announced its approval of US$385 million arms sale to Taiwan.

The Chinese spokesperson also criticized Democratic Progressive Party officials in Taiwan and said that paying ‘protection fees’ would not bring any security to Taiwan, but would only lead to self-destruction.

“Taiwan, stop seeking American support for independence, because such efforts will fail,” he said.

The Chinese spokesperson said the US move is a serious violation of the One-China principle and China-US joint statements, especially the August 17 statements of 1982.

The spokesperson appealed to America to immediately stop providing arms to Taiwan. “Never underestimate China’s determination to take strong and firm countermeasures to firmly safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said.

Taiwan is seen as a potential military flashpoint in US-China relations. Beijing considers this island as its part. He believed that if necessary, it could be reunited with the mainland by force.
