Under the Raksha Kavach Abhiyan, the Reserve Bank of India has also issued suggestions to make people aware and stay away from cyber thugs. Under the suggestion, it was said that beware of audio/video calls from cyber criminals in the name of officials of RBI, banks, government agencies, courier companies. Don’t panic if someone threatens to take legal action or asks for immediate money or threatens to close your credit or debit card. Do not share personal and financial information. Verify callers and complain on helpline number 1930.
Also good for cheating by changing QR code.
Many merchants post QR codes or display a QR code outside their establishments to accept online payments. The fraudsters cleverly change their own QR code and display instead, when the customer makes the payment, the amount is deposited directly into the account of the fraudsters. In 28 such cases, cases of fraud of more than Rs 32 lakh have been registered in the state. Avoid this: Never paste the QR code in a place where a fraudster can easily change it. If you take payment from anyone through QR code, then first check whether the payment has been transferred to the account or not. Also verify daily that the QR code pasted or placed on the display is yours.
Cheating by impersonating acquaintances: Cyber thugs pose as acquaintances on social media and ask for money, saying that they are in trouble. They send messages by putting an acquaintance’s photo on WhatsApp DP or make victims of fraud by sending messages on e-mail. They cheat someone by sending a message that they are friends on social media. Even by calling, they cheat by pretending to speak in the voice of an acquaintance. In the last three years, 175 cases of fraud through calls were reported in Rajasthan, out of which 56 cases are from this year itself.
In all these cases, fraud of Rs 6 crore 43 lakh has taken place. 1 crore 63 lakh in 28 cases through e-mail and Rs 3 crore 29 lakh in 1112 cases through WhatsApp and other social media platforms.
Avoid this: Do not panic after seeing a message asking for money in the name of help on social media platforms. Before giving money, contact the said person and inquire. Don’t get fooled even after seeing an acquaintance’s photo on DP. Remember, the acquaintance will not ask for help by calling from another number. Verify the numbers also.
