California shaken by strong earthquake, intensity 7.0 on Richter scale

Los Angeles, December 6 (IANS). A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck parts of Northern California, prompting a temporary tsunami warning. Some coastal areas of Northern California and San Francisco Bay also had to be evacuated.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), strong earthquake tremors were felt in the coastal area of ​​Northern California, whose intensity was recorded at 7.0 on the Richter scale. These earthquake tremors were felt at 10.44 am on Thursday local time. Initially its intensity was reported as 6.6 but later it was upgraded to 7.0. According to Xinhua news agency, the epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 0.6 kilometers.

It occurred in a coastal area about 100 km northwest of Ferndale, a city of more than 1,000 in Humboldt County, Northern California.

A tsunami warning was issued for 5.3 million people in California by the US National Weather Service (NWS) just minutes after the earthquake struck. A yellow alert was issued regarding this, which warns about minor damage. However, later it was also withdrawn.

The impact of the earthquake also reached San Francisco. Due to which all transit services passing through the underwater tunnel connecting San Francisco and Oakland (San Francisco Bay Area) were temporarily halted.

Additionally, residents of Northern California reported that they felt strong tremors of the earthquake. Tremors were felt more than twelve times. At present there has been no news of any casualties or any kind of damage.
