Ottawa, December 7 (IANS). Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Jolie announced the launch of Canada’s Arctic Foreign Policy.
The foreign minister said in a release that the Arctic Foreign Policy is a diplomatic strategy for Canada’s engagement in and across the Arctic, providing an expanded presence and partnerships to meet current needs, Xinhua news agency reported. And provides flexibility to adapt to future challenges.
According to the release, Arctic foreign policy has four foreign policy pillars, respectively emphasizing Canada’s sovereignty; Advancing Canada’s interests through practical diplomacy; Leadership on Arctic governance and multilateral challenges and adopting a more inclusive approach to Arctic diplomacy.
According to the release, one of the main priorities of the Arctic foreign policy is to deepen cooperation in the North American Arctic region. The North American Arctic region includes the vast northern regions of three countries: Alaska (USA) in the west, Northern Canada in the center, and Greenland in the east.
The Canadian Arctic region covers 40 percent of Canada’s landmass and more than 70 percent of its coastline. It is home to many Canadian peoples, including Indigenous peoples, who have inhabited this land since time immemorial.
