New Delhi, November 20 (IANS). Due to increasing pollution in Delhi, people’s health is being adversely affected. In such a situation, people are adopting some special changes and precautions in their diet to reduce the effects of pollution. While talking to IANS on this issue, Dr. Bibhu Anand, Department of Medicine, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, shared several important measures to prevent pollution.
Dr. Bibhu Anand said that the problem of pollution has increased so much that we cannot eliminate it completely, but we can definitely take some steps to reduce its effect. He said that in a city like Delhi, pollution has a big impact on health and to improve it, apart from government rules, some individual steps can be taken.
He advised that to avoid pollution, it is most important that we pay attention to our diet and daily routine. We can improve our health by eating a balanced diet, eating at the right time, and taking necessary precautions to avoid pollution. “Only a balanced diet, right timing and well-cooked food can reduce the effects of pollution.
Emphasizing the importance of diet, Dr. Anand said that a balanced diet is most important. We should include all the nutrients in our diet, such as proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Pollution mainly affects the lungs, hence we should eat such things which produce antioxidants in our body. In particular, the intake of citrus fruits such as orange, amla, lemon, and sweet lime should be increased. These fruits are rich in Vitamin C and Vitamin E, which protect the body from free radicals and help in reducing the effects of pollution. During this period, one should be careful regarding some diet.
Doctor Anand told that you should keep in mind that you consume these fruits in the morning, especially during breakfast. This reduces your chances of getting cold and cough. He also says that one should avoid consuming cold things and fruits at night, because the body’s immunity can become weak at this time.
The doctor also told that people often keep fruits in the fridge and then consume them, which is not good for health. Fruits should be eaten only after washing them thoroughly because due to pollution, many poisonous gases stick to the surface of these fruits. Along with this, he advised to increase the intake of turmeric, ginger and garlic. These food items contain immunity-boosting elements, which help the body fight pollution. He told that if someone does not have high blood pressure or other serious health problems, then including these things in the diet can be beneficial.
Dr. Anand also suggested some more measures to prevent pollution. He said that if you are going out then wear a mask, especially when you are in crowded areas. Apart from this, he advised to avoid going to dusty areas as the level of pollution is higher in these areas.
