China handed over the marine map of Huangyan Island to the United Nations

Beijing, December 3 (IANS). Kang Shuang, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, on behalf of the Chinese Government, submitted a statement regarding the territorial baseline of Huangyan Island and the corresponding maritime map to Acting Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Stephen Matthias, on behalf of the Chinese Government. This Statement and the associated maritime map will be publicly available on the United Nations website.

Huangyan Island is considered part of China’s territory. On November 10 this year, the Chinese government officially determined and published the territorial baseline of Huangyan Island in accordance with these international laws, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and China’s Law on the Territorial Sea and Contiguous Area. The action is part of China’s ongoing effort to strengthen maritime governance in line with international laws and regulations.

According to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, coastal countries must submit a copy of their territorial baselines or geographical coordinate table to the UN Secretary-General. By submitting this statement and related maps regarding Huangyan Island, China is fulfilling its obligations under the Treaty and taking appropriate measures to safeguard its sovereignty, maritime rights and interests.
