Beijing, December 11 (IANS). Poverty alleviation has been a major challenge facing mankind since ancient times. Even today, more than one billion people in the world are living in extreme poverty. As the world’s largest developing country with a population of more than 1.4 billion, China has lifted 800 million people out of poverty. The plan is to achieve the poverty eradication goals of the United Nations Agenda-2030 for Sustainable Development ahead of schedule.
China’s poverty alleviation strategy focuses on “targeted poverty alleviation” and integrates rapid economic growth with improving people’s livelihoods. This is to ensure that anti-poverty measures respond to the specific needs of communities by tailoring solutions to local conditions. This approach has transformed some of China’s poorest areas and provides useful experience for other countries facing similar challenges.
Through initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative, China cooperates with developing countries around the world on projects in infrastructure, education, and health care. These projects create jobs, improve connectivity, promote inclusive growth and help millions of people escape poverty. So far, China has provided development assistance to more than 160 countries, established high-quality “Belt and Road” partnerships with more than 150 countries, and established 1,100 projects with a total amount of nearly US$20 billion in development funds. Has supported more than 100 projects.
China’s contribution to global poverty alleviation is not limited to financial and technical assistance. By strengthening the self-development and capacity building of developing countries, it promotes more sustainable global poverty alleviation efforts. So far, China has trained more than 4 million professionals in more than 180 countries and regions, improving their poverty alleviation and development capabilities.
At the recently concluded G-20 Rio summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced China’s decision to join the global coalition against hunger and poverty. Meanwhile, China has been implementing a zero-tariff policy to least developed countries since December. By providing duty-free access to its vast market, China aims to help less developed countries expand their export capabilities, generate income and reduce their dependence on external aid.
