Chandigarh, December 1 (IANS). Congress MLA Sukhpal Khaira spoke to IANS on Sunday demanding a law for people coming from other states in Punjab on the lines of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand states.
Congress MLA Sukhpal Khaira had brought a private member bill in the assembly. At the same time, held a press conference again on Sunday.
Meanwhile, he told IANS, “In Punjab, we had presented a private member’s bill to the Speaker of the Assembly in January 2023. In which people coming from outside the state, whether for work or for permanent residence, There is a law regarding this in Himachal and Uttarakhand, we are not alone in saying that no person should be a permanent resident voter in Punjab. Yes, but this is the rule in Himachal, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Gujarat and other states.
He said, “Our demography is deteriorating in Punjab. The balance of our population is deteriorating. Punjabi language is most spoken in Punjab, Sikh population is in majority here, whereas, in other parts of the country their population is only two percent. “If we allow people from outside to come into Punjab without any law or record, our identity is in danger.”
The Congress MLA further said that a lot of crime is happening in Punjab, but there is no record here as to who came from where and who committed the crime. Therefore, this law is very important to save our demographic situation. It is very sad that it has been two years since this bill was introduced, but the Aam Aadmi Party government has kept it on hold. Bhagwant Mann government is not getting debate on this. I want to ask Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal whether they are paying attention to Punjab or not. If this bill is passed then we will give up our demand.
