New Delhi, November 17 (IANS). The protest of women employees of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) is not stopping. Now male employees have also come in support of women employees. The employees have demanded equal pay for equal work, permanent jobs and stopping the process of privatization.
In support of women employees, male employees of DTC also held a meeting at Sarojini Nagar depot on Sunday. Employees from various depots of Delhi participated in large numbers in this. The employees raised their voice in support of their pending demands and warned that if their demands were not resolved, they would be forced to go on strike.
“We have gathered here in support of the protest that was started by our mothers and sisters. Our demand is that we get equal pay for equal work, and we will definitely get it,” Lalit Choudhary, president of DTC Employees Unity Union, told IANS. We want to be given employment till the age of 60, as promised by the Delhi government, we should not be discriminated against, we should get respectable salary. Privatization should be stopped immediately, because giving the services of DTC buses to private bus operators will not benefit the people of Delhi.”
Lalit Choudhary warned that if the government did not address their demands, the employees might intensify the agitation. He said that already on November 13, an ultimatum was given that if the problems were not resolved, we could take steps like strike, protest or chakka jam. We hoped that the government would take our problems seriously, but it seems that it is ignoring us.
DTC conductor Imran Khan said, “Our demands are absolutely right. Delhi High Court has already ordered that privatization of DTC be stopped, but the government is not paying attention to it. We need a stable job and equal pay.” Nowadays, there is not a single DTC employee driver driving these buses. Our contract employees are facing exploitation every day. And sometimes they even commit suicide due to mental pressure.”
