New Delhi, November 16 (IANS). A research has revealed that if you also want to increase your memory with increasing age, then eggs can help in this. Eating eggs can help in maintaining memory.
The University of California San Diego team said eggs are high in dietary cholesterol, but they also provide nutrients beneficial for cognitive function.
They examined the effects of egg consumption on changes in brain function among 890 able-bodied adults over the age of 55 (357 men; 533 women).
The results, published in the journal ‘Nutrients’, showed that women who ate more eggs had a relatively slow decline in verbal fluency (the ability to speak words quickly and clearly) over four years.
Along with this, women who ate more eggs had better ability to name categories of objects like animals and trees as compared to those who ate less eggs or did not eat eggs at all. All these things were considered keeping in mind various lifestyle and health related factors.
Eggs contain choline which is beneficial in improving memory. This may improve brain function, memory and communication between brain cells. Eggs also contain vitamins like B-6, B-12 and folic acid that may help prevent brain shrinkage and improve memory.
The study found no significant effects on cognitive function in men, but also revealed no harmful effects of egg consumption in either gender. The researchers said the finding is important, because memory loss has been a concern as people live longer.
Donna Critz-Silverstein, a professor at UC San Diego, said that overall the research suggests that eggs are a cheap and accessible way to benefit cognitive health in women.
Many previous researches had revealed that eggs also provide essential proteins which can protect women from osteoporosis.
Eggs are rich in high-quality protein, vitamin B12, phosphorus and selenium. Vitamin A, Vitamin B12 and selenium present in eggs are important for keeping the immune system healthy.
