ED recovers huge amount of cash from alleged aide of Jharkhand minister

New Delhi: The law enforcement agency on Monday conducted raids at several locations in Ranchi and seized a large amount of “unspent” cash from close associates of Jharkhand Rural Development Minister and Congress MP Alamgir Alam.

Video footage shows wads of cash being spread in the room of a domestic worker, said to be related to Rural Development Minister Alamgir Alam’s private secretary.

Talking to PTI, Alam said, “There is no official information on this as of now. He added: “I was watching TV and the hypothesis was that it was related to the official PS (private secretary) provided to me by the government.”

Mr. Alam (70) is one of the Congress leaders representing Pakur’s seat in the Jharkhand Assembly. Officials said cash worth over Rs 200 crore was seized in the raid.

In early February 2023, authorities arrested Virendra K. Ram, chief engineer of the Jharkhand Rural Development Department, for irregularities in the implementation of some government programs.

“Vurendra Kumar Ram, who worked as a senior village engineer in Ranchi, collected the proceeds of crime on behalf of contractors,” officials said in a statement last year. In April after seizing assets of directors worth Rs 390 crore.

“Virendra Kumar Ram and his family used the proceeds of crime to live a very luxurious life,” the report said.
