Electricity employees demonstrated against Pratapgarh privatization

Pratapgarh : Pratapgarh Electricity employees and officials on Monday staged a strong demonstration in Pratapgarh against the process of handing over the production, transmission and distribution of Electricity Corporation to private hands by the Rajasthan Government. On the call of the District Electricity Joint Struggle Committee, the union officials and employees united and registered their protest. The members of the committee submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister and the Energy Secretary through the Assistant Engineer and Subdivision Officers at all the subdivision offices of the district. District convenor Abhay Singh Rao said that in this memorandum the government has been warned that if the privatization proposal is not immediately withdrawn, the agitation will be further intensified.

Economic burden on the general public: It was stated in the memorandum that privatization of the electricity department will put huge economic pressure on the consumers.
Threat of unemployment: Due to privatization, the jobs of thousands of employees will be in danger.
Decline in quality of service: Employees say that private companies will focus on making profits, which may affect the quality of service.
Strategic Security: Privatization of an important sector like energy can be dangerous from a strategic point of view.

Committee co-convenor Mukesh Borana, Discom Vice President Dungar Singh, District President Mohan Lal, and other union officials were present in the protest. They unanimously decided that the movement would continue until the government canceled the privatization proposal. On November 29, massive demonstrations will be held at district headquarters across Rajasthan.

The committee has also opposed the contract system. Union members say that the contract system not only exploits the employees, but it also affects the quality of public services.
