Farmer leader Jagjit Dallewal detained by police before hunger strike

Chandigarh, November 26 (IANS). Farmer leader Sardar Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who started an indefinite hunger strike from Tuesday to press for the demands of farmers, was taken into custody by the police. He was going to sit on hunger strike for MSP and loan waiver. Farmers involved in the movement are saying that they have been taken to an unknown place, while Punjab Police claims that they have been admitted to DMC Hospital in Ludhiana.

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher met the media and said, “According to the information we have received, the police took Dallewal into custody from Khanauri border between 2 and 2:30 in the night. During this time, many policemen were also seen conversing among themselves in Hindi.”

Meanwhile, he targeted the Modi government and said, “This government often accuses us that farmers do not carry out peaceful agitation. Let me tell you that 9 months have passed. But, not a single demand of ours has been accepted yet. From this you can imagine how concerned this government is about the farmers. On the contrary, our farmer brothers were oppressed. Hundreds of farmers were attacked. Many farmers were injured during this period. But, now when all of us farmers want to unite and present our views peacefully before the government, these people forcibly took away Dallewal. No information has been revealed yet about where they have been taken.”

He further said, “It is the responsibility of the Punjab government to come forward and make public the contribution of the Punjab Police in detaining Dallevaz. What standard has the police followed in detaining him? There should be information about this. The information about the place where Dallewal ji is kept in custody should be made public.”

He said, “I demand from the government that Dallewal ji should be released as soon as possible, otherwise I want to make it clear that its serious consequences will be seen in the coming days. Along with this, we appeal to the farmers and laborers of the country to come in large numbers, so that we can fight the oppression of this government.

At the same time, the statement of Punjab Police has also come out regarding the detention of Jagjit Singh Dallewal. DIG Patiala Range MS Sidhu said, “He is a very senior farmer leader, he is elderly. He has been admitted to DMC Hospital, Ludhiana, where his health is being examined.”
