Global South youth media activity begins in Rio

Beijing, November 19 (IANS). As an important step to strengthen ties between youth from countries of the Global South, a face-to-face media activity was inaugurated in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro on 18 November. The event coincided with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Brazil and his participation in the G-20 summit in Rio de Janeiro.

Organized by China Media Group (CMG) in collaboration with the Secretariat of the G-20 Youth Summit (U-20) and Brazil’s Presidential Palace, the initiative brought together 215 media outlets from 74 countries. The event underlined the importance of fostering a community with a shared future for humanity. Eminent global leaders, including Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, sent congratulatory messages, many of whom also gave video speeches.

Around 200 representatives from countries like Brazil, Argentina and Mexico were present, making the atmosphere of cooperation even more vibrant. Addressing the gathering, CMG President Shan Haixiong highlighted the important role of youth in shaping the future.

He said, “Youth are a priceless asset for any country and race in the world.” Emphasizing that the goal of the initiative is to create a platform for youth to collaborate in media, art, social research and sports, he said.

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya expressed confidence that this activity will enhance exchange and collaboration between youth in the Global South, thereby paving the way for opportunities that will boost the prosperity of the region.

As a major attraction, CMG formalized partnerships through collaboration agreements with several organizations. In addition, it launched the “Latin American Youth Visit China” project, which aims to deepen cultural and business ties.
