Sana, 20 November (IANS). Yemen’s Houthi group claimed to have targeted another ship in the Red Sea. “We fired several ballistic and naval rockets at the ship Anadolu Aceh in the Red Sea, the target was accurate,” Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sariya said in a statement.
However, Sariya did not give any details about the damage or casualties, according to Xinhua news agency.
According to UK Maritime Trade Operations, the attack occurred on Monday. The agency posted on social media platform X that a rocket landed near the ship, but it caused no damage and all crew members were safe.
Sariya claimed that his group targeted the ship, registered in Panama and sailing under the Panamanian flag, because its owner company allegedly has dealings with Israel.
A Houthi military spokesman vowed more attacks on ships ‘with links to Israel’ in the Red Sea.
Since November 2023, the Houthi group has been carrying out rocket and drone attacks on Israel. It is targeting ships ‘with ties to Israel’ in the Red Sea.
According to the group, he is reportedly doing this to show solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza amid the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Yemen has been embroiled in a devastating conflict since 2014. On September 21, 2014, Houthi rebels captured several northern provinces. After this, the internationally recognized Yemeni government had to move out of the capital Sanaa.
The Houthi group still controls most parts of the northern areas. This includes Sanaa and the strategically important Red Sea port Hodeidah.
The internationally recognized Yemeni government, led by the Presidential Leadership Council since April 2022, controls mainly the southern and eastern regions and Aden has been granted the status of temporary capital.
