Baku, November 12 (IANS). India is not participating in the two-day World Leaders Climate Action Summit (WLCAS) starting on Tuesday in Baku, Azerbaijan. The summit will begin with statements by participating countries at the 2024 United Nations Climate Conference (COP29). The main objective of the conference is to achieve new climate finance targets for the countries most vulnerable to climate impacts.
President of host Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has invited all the visiting heads of state and government to participate in this conference.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, 82 national leaders, Vice-Presidents and senior royal envoys will present their views in this conference.
Host country Azerbaijan said the invitation to WLCAS reflects the importance for world leaders to partner, take action to reduce emissions, turn key climate-related decisions into concrete action and credible plans to tackle climate change.
Responding to India’s non-participation in the climate talks, an Indian-origin observer of the climate talks, on condition of anonymity, said, “This is not a dialogue, just statements by countries. It is necessary for all countries to participate in it.” Not there.”
Explaining further, the observer said, “Since the leaders started arriving, a stage was made for them to deliver their speeches.”
Indian Prime Minister’s non-attendance at COP does not affect Indian representation during the talks? In response to this question, TERI’s distinguished fellow R.R. “Having heads of governments attend the climate COP in the first few days is a recent trend. It is not mandatory. It started in 2021, when the Paris Agreement was launched,” Rashmi said.
