Jodhpur : Agricultural scientists collected important information from farmers for the GI tag of Mathania chilli of Jodhpur, which is liked in the country and the world. Efforts have been going on for a long time for the GI tag of this chilli. A team of senior scientists from the Agricultural University visited the fields of farmers in Tinwari, Mathania area and talked to the farmers. Vice Chancellor of Jodhpur Agricultural University, Dr. Arun Kumar said – There is a special demand for this chilli grown in the special climate of Marwar. Lives. In the interest of Marwar’s reputation and farmers, it is necessary for Mathania chilli to get GI tag. In such a situation, Agricultural University Jodhpur has now started work on its GI tagging project. The main scientific members of the GI tagging project include Dr. Mithilesh Kumar, Dr. Rahul Bhardwaj, Dr. Hardayal Chaudhary, Dr. Dinesh Kumar, Dr. Ankur Tripathi and Dr. Dan Singh Jakhar.
Special team of scientists formed
Dr. MM Sundaria, coordinator of the project and senior agricultural scientist, said – A special team of 10 senior scientists has been formed in the Agricultural University for this project. The team of scientists met chilli producing farmers in the fields around Mathania area on November 18 and collected historical information about chilli and other information. The team took samples of chilli and now studies are being done in the university lab on various aspects including its colour, taste, spiciness etc. After this, soon application for GI tagging will be made as per the procedure.
GI tagging is important in many ways
Dr. Chandan Rai, co-coordinator of the project, says that getting GI tag for Mathania chilli is important in many ways. By getting GI tag for this chilli, not only will the demand for this chilli increase globally but the farmers of the region will also get special commercial benefits. GI tagging gives special legal protection to the product. The intellectual property of the product is protected and the name of the product cannot be misused. GI tagging helps in launching the product in the market along with authenticity. Income and prestige of the sector at the global level also increase.

The name of the product may be given a ‘Geographical Indication’ (GI). If they have any specific connection with the place where they are made or produced. Geographical indication identifies a product as originating in a particular place. It gives authenticity to the characteristics of a product, which are due to its geographical origin. For example, Alphonso mango, Pashmina shawl, Nagpur orange, Bikaneri bhujia are GI tagged.

A team of senior scientists has been formed for this project in Agricultural University, Jodhpur. Scientists are working at a rapid pace.
