Iran calls US ‘interference’ in Venezuela’s internal affairs ‘illegal’

Tehran, 24 November (IANS). Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghei described US interference in Venezuela’s internal affairs as illegal.

He expressed his views through a post on social media platform X on Saturday. His comments were in response to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s post in which he had said that the Trump government has recognized Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia as the South American country’s “President Elect.”

“We condemn the ‘illegal interference’ by the United States and some of its allies in the internal affairs of Venezuela, which is reminiscent of the malicious and divisive interventions of 2019 through the recognition of a parallel government and the Venezuelan government,” Baghei said. Express our solidarity with the legitimate and elected President Nicolás Maduro.”

Baghees said Iran does not consider any foreign interference in Venezuela’s internal affairs contrary to the principles of international law and the UN Charter and to peace and stability in the South American country, Xinhua news agency reported.

On July 29, Nicolas Maduro was declared the winner of the Venezuelan presidential election. In the elections held on July 28, he got 51.2 percent votes.

The United States has adopted a policy of economic sanctions and diplomatic isolation against Maduro’s government.
