Tehran, Dec 7 (IANS): Tehran on Saturday rejected reports of the evacuation of the Islamic Republic’s embassy in Syria. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghei claimed the embassy was functioning as before.
Some media reports on Friday claimed that Iran has started evacuating its diplomatic staff and their families amid the fighting in Syria. Let us tell you that government forces are fighting rebel groups in Syria. It is being claimed in many media reports that the rebel groups are currently gaining the upper hand in the fight.
According to Iran’s official news agency IRNA, Baghees said on Saturday that the news of the evacuation of the Iranian embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus is false and the diplomatic mission is continuing its activities as before.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in an interview to Iraqi Al-Sharqiya channel that the recent events in Syria will not be limited to this country only. He said terrorism and developments in Syria also pose a threat to Iraq’s security.
Araghchi said that the developments are happening very fast, which raises many questions. He alleged that the thinking of the American and Israeli regime is behind all these rapid developments.
The Iranian Foreign Minister said, “After Gaza they came to Lebanon and then to Syria and in my opinion this trend will not stop in Syria and the entire region is in danger.”
