Jalore farmers remained adamant on the demand of determining the rights on the water of Jawai Dam.

Jalore : The farmers’ movement, which was lying cold due to government holidays on Saturday and Sunday, will be given a new lease of life on Monday. As part of the ongoing farmers’ movement under the aegis of the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh, demands for farmers’ welfare will once again be made from Monday with a new strategy. But farmers will gather. Due to Sunday being a holiday, less number of farmers were seen in the pandal. The farmers struggled throughout the day. Farmer leader Ratan Singh Kaniwada says that farmers from different villages are gathering in the movement. This time, mere assurances on the demands of the farmers will not suffice. He said that only on positive initiatives on important issues like determination of rights on the water of Jawai Dam, release of water for dry areas in the flow area of Jawai River, issues related to Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, demands related to electricity connection, implementation of Mahi project etc. The matter will be able to move forward.

Three big movements till now, result zero

Three major agitations have been carried out from time to time by two big organizations of farmers on the issue of Jawai and Mahi. After which the farmers got assurances about the implementation of the project at the government level. Announcements were made for DPR and with the change of government the matter went on hold. Farmers are angry with this, farmers say that every time assurance is given, this time work is needed on this issue. Farmers are also angry because new projects based on Jawai Dam are being built ignoring the demands of the district residents.

Why are farmers angry?

The rainfall graph is falling and due to lack of flow in Jawai river, more than 300 agricultural wells have dried up. The only source of their recharge is Jawai river. On which Jawai Dam is built and on an average water flows into the river only once or twice in a decade. Due to which the agricultural sector has been ruined and farmers are forced to migrate.
