Jay Shah takes over as ICC chair before decision on Champions Trophy

Dubai, December 1 (IANS). Jay Shah, who is set to begin his tenure as ICC chairman on Sunday, has outlined his vision to leverage the sport’s presence at the Olympics and promote women’s cricket around the world.

He was elected the new chairman of ICC on August 27, 2024. Till now Jay Shah was working as the Secretary of BCCI. He is the 5th Indian to become the chairman of ICC.

Shah, 36, was elected unopposed as the new ICC chairman to replace Greg Barclay, who has held the post since November 2020. He has become the youngest person to hold this prestigious post. He is the fifth Indian to become ICC chairman after Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar.

In a statement issued by the ICC, Shah said, “I am honored to take up the role of ICC President and am grateful for the support and confidence of the ICC Directors and Member Boards. This is an exciting time for the game as we look to take on the role of ICC President.” The Angels 28 are preparing for the Olympic Games and working to make cricket more inclusive and attractive to fans around the world.”

He further added, “We are at a critical juncture with the co-existence of multiple formats and the need to accelerate the growth of the women’s game. Cricket has immense potential globally. I look forward to taking advantage of these opportunities and taking the game to new heights.” I look forward to working closely with the ICC team and member nations to take us to greater heights.”

Shah’s journey in cricket administration started in 2009 with Gujarat Cricket Association. During his tenure, he oversaw the development of the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

In 2019, he became the BCCI Secretary, making him the youngest person to hold the post. He has also played important roles as Chairman of the Asian Cricket Council and Chairman of the Finance and Certain Other Matters Committee of the ICC.

During his tenure at the BCCI, Shah oversaw the record-breaking IPL media rights deal, the creation of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), the establishment and inauguration of a new state-of-the-art Center of Excellence in Bengaluru and the Test Cricket Incentive Scheme.

Shah said, “I would also like to thank Greg Barclay for his leadership over the past four years and the achievements he has achieved during that period. I look forward to working closely with the ICC team and Member States.” to expand the reach and growth of the sport globally.”
