1. Sharp objects like knives, scissors or any other metal object
It is considered inauspicious to give or receive sharp or pointed objects like knives, scissors, blades etc. as gifts. According to the scriptures, these items contain negative energy which can create tension in relationships, hence such items should not be exchanged on Diwali.

2. Black colored items
Black color is considered a symbol of negativity and inauspiciousness. Diwali is a festival of positive energy and light, hence giving or receiving black colored items as gifts is considered prohibited. Instead, red, yellow or golden colors are considered symbols of prosperity, and are auspicious to give as gifts.
3. Items related to locks and bindings
Giving locks or any closed clothing like handkerchief or cloth on Diwali is considered inauspicious. The lock blocks the prosperity and good fortune of the house. Giving such gifts is likely to sour relationships and may lead to financial crunch at home.
4. Fake flowers or ornamental plants
Giving gifts of fake flowers or plants on Diwali is considered inauspicious. According to the scriptures, fake plants have negative energy and prevent prosperity in the home. Instead, it is auspicious to gift lush, natural plants, which are considered symbols of life and prosperity.
5. Empty vessel
One should avoid gifting empty utensils like Lota, Kalash or any other vessel. According to the scriptures, giving empty utensils brings poverty in the house. If you are giving a vessel as a gift, then fill it with some sweets or grains, so that it remains a symbol of prosperity.
6. Leather items
It is considered inauspicious to give leather items like shoes, belts, or bags as gifts on Diwali. Leather is obtained from meat and these types of items are considered a symbol of negative energy. These gifts can create hindrances in peace and good fortune in the home.
8. Symbols that maintain precision
Cleaning items like brooms or cleaning equipment should not be gifted on Diwali. This symbolically indicates the removal of prosperity and happiness from the house. It is believed that this may take away the blessings from the house.
