Jaipur : The government is going to form a cabinet sub-committee to explore the possibilities of one state-one election in the state. The committee will make recommendations on how the elections of urban bodies and panchayats can be held simultaneously. The committee will find a solution to the legal hurdles coming in the way of conducting simultaneous elections in Rajasthan and will make recommendations based on the opinion of legal experts. In such a situation, it is almost certain that the elections of urban bodies and panchayats starting from November will be postponed. If this happens, then the command will be given to the administration here till the elections are held. However, according to subject experts, the path to conducting simultaneous elections is not easy. Many types of legal hurdles will come up.
Three sub-committees will be formed
Separate committees will be formed for the autonomous governance department and the panchayati raj department for ward reorganization and demarcation. Whereas, a committee will be formed for one state-one election.
Will there be a change in the law, will we bring an ordinance or a special session
Under One State-One Election, there will be amendments in the Municipality and Panchayati Raj Act. The government has two options to implement these amendments. Either bring an ordinance or call a two-day special session of the Assembly.
Status of bodies and panchayats
There are 291 urban bodies in the state. These include 13 Municipal Corporations, 52 Municipal Councils and 226 Nagar Palikas. Recently the number of corporations, municipalities and councils has been increased. Elections of all the bodies except one are to be held from November this year to December 2025. There is only one body where the board tenure is till January 2026. In Panchayati Raj, elections of 11341 Gram Panchayats, 352 Panchayat Samitis and 33 Zilla Parishads can be held simultaneously.
Delimitation process stopped in the newly formed 86 bodies
Elections for 86 newly formed bodies were to be held in the state in November-December, but recently the Department of Autonomous Government had ordered to stop the delimitation work. Since then, there were indications that the government is in the mood to hold elections for the bodies and panchayats simultaneously.
