Kuwait to install AI powered cameras to strengthen road safety

Kuwait City, November 28 (IANS). Kuwait on Thursday announced the installation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) based cameras across the country to enhance road safety and enforce traffic laws.

The country’s Ministry of Interior (MOI) said the initiative was taken under the directives of Sheikh Fahad Youssef Al-Saud Al-Sabah, acting Prime Minister, Minister of Defense and Minister of the Interior.

“The introduction of AI cameras is an important step towards creating a safer and more efficient road environment in Kuwait,” the statement said.

The interior ministry posted that the statement was shared on ‘X’ based on instructions from His Excellency Sheikh Fahad Youssef Saud Al-Sabah, Acting Prime Minister, Minister of Defense and Minister of the Interior.

“The Ministry of Interior, representing the Traffic and Operations sector, announces the launch of the installation of automatic surveillance cameras using AI to monitor traffic obstruction and violation of rules,” the ministry said.

The AI-powered system is designed to monitor traffic in real-time, detect violations like speeding, crossing red lights and reckless driving and identify the vehicles involved.

This advanced technology is expected to significantly reduce rash driving, increase compliance with traffic laws and reduce road accidents.

The ministry has appealed to all drivers to strictly follow traffic rules and cooperate with the authorities. Citizens are also requested to respect lane signs and traffic signals and avoid any action that violates the rights of others on the road.

Emphasizing the importance of traffic rules, the ministry said that it is necessary to follow them to ensure traffic safety. “This comprehensive approach to traffic monitoring aims to improve road safety standards and protect the lives of citizens and residents,” the ministry statement said.

The ministry said the technology aims to reduce dangerous driving behaviour, improve compliance with traffic laws and reduce road accidents.
