New Delhi, November 15 (IANS). Sleep imbalance can be harmful to mental health. If you do not get a good sleep, it will not only spoil your health, but it will also have a deep impact on your mental health.
To understand the impact of sleep on our mental health, IANS spoke to psychologist and educator Dr. Priya Bhatnagar.
Dr. Bhatnagar told, “What effect does sleep have on our mental health? This is a very important and serious question for us, and perhaps it is something that we often overlook. We don’t pay much attention to it. But just like a gadget needs time for recharging, our brain also needs sleep to refresh itself so that it can return to its proper functioning.
He further said, “Many times it is seen that people have problem of sleeplessness. There can be many reasons for not being able to sleep. If you do not sleep or are in a state of sleep deprivation, then its mental and physical effects can be serious.
On what effect sleep has on mental health, the psychologist said, “Lack of sleep has deep effects on mental health. For example, if you don’t get enough sleep, you may become angrier or have a decline in cognitive functions, such as trouble concentrating, memory loss, and difficulty completing tasks. Mistakes can happen.
The doctor said, “Lack of sleep also has a deep impact on our emotional state. Just as sleep gives us time to recover physically, it also gives us time to heal our emotions. During sleep deprivation, our negative response to stressful situations increases. Many researches support that when we are suffering from lack of sleep, our negative thinking also increases. As a result, you may feel anxiety or depression.
Talking about its solutions, the doctor said, “If we are not able to sleep better, then it becomes necessary to contact a mental health expert.” “Sleep recovery is extremely important, as it is vital to improving mental and physical health.”
He further said, “Every person’s sleep needs are different. It is not necessary that if I need seven hours of sleep, the same is enough for you. Maybe 8 hours or 6 hours of sleep is enough for you. It is generally observed that children and adolescents require more sleep than adults.
