Story of Veervati on Karva Chauth
According to mythology, Karva Chauth is celebrated on Kartik Vadi Chaturthi. Lord Ganesha is worshiped in this. In ancient times, a Brahmin named Dwija had seven sons and a daughter named Veeravati. Veeravati was a beautiful and pious princess. She was the only sister of her seven brothers. After marriage, Veervati observed Karva Chauth fast for the first time for the long life of her husband. He did not take food or water throughout the day and observed the fast with full devotion. But as the day progressed, she became extremely weak due to hunger and thirst. Seeing this condition of Veervati, her brothers became worried. They became sad after seeing their sister’s condition and tried to persuade her to break the fast, but Veeravati said that she would not break the fast until the moon rose.
Seeing the condition of their sister, Veeravati’s brothers thought of a solution. He created a fake moon by using a mirror disguised as a tree. The brothers told Veervati that the moon has come out and after seeing it, she should break her fast. Seeing that fake moon, Veervati broke her fast and drank water. As soon as she broke her fast, she got the news that her husband had become seriously ill. Veeravati immediately realized that she broke the fast without worshiping the Moon and before the proper time, which led to this untoward incident. She became extremely sad and began to repent. Veervati was determined to ensure the long life of her husband and again observed the fast of Karva Chauth with full devotion. Pleased with her devotion and dedication, Mother Parvati blessed her and her husband became healthy.
