New Delhi, November 12 (IANS). Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi has said that he wants to retire from One Day International cricket after the Champions Trophy 2025. Nabi explained his plans while receiving the Player of the Series award after the conclusion of the ODI series against Bangladesh in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
“After the last World Cup, I had considered myself retired but then we qualified for the Champions Trophy. Then I realized that it would be good if I play this tournament,” Nabi told the home broadcaster after the third ODI.
There are speculations that Nabi has informed the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) about his retirement and he will continue playing T20. Nabi has played a total of 167 matches in this format and is also the cricketer who has played the most ODIs for Afghanistan. At present he is also the best all-rounder in the ICC rankings.
Nabi made his ODI debut against Scotland in 2009 and has so far scored 3600 runs in this format. Nabi is second in the list of batsmen who have scored most runs for Afghanistan. He has 17 half-centuries and 2 centuries in this format at an average of 27.48. He has also taken 172 wickets at an average of 32.47 and is also ranked second in the list of bowlers taking the most wickets for Afghanistan.
Afghanistan is going to participate in the Champions Trophy for the first time. Since they finished sixth in last year’s ODI World Cup, they got entry into the Champions Trophy. The top seven teams in the ODI World Cup and host Pakistan are part of this eight-team tournament.
Nabi has had a significant contribution in the regular development of Afghanistan in all three formats. He was the captain of the team in the 2015 ODI World Cup and was a part of the team in 2019 and 2023. He retired from Test in 2019.
