Dhanteras mythology
Once Yamraj asked the Yamdoots that you know how many people’s lives you take. Don’t you ever feel pity for someone who takes human lives? The Yamdoots said, No Maharaj, we only follow the instructions given by you. Then Yamraj said, feel free to tell whether you have ever felt pity in taking the life of any person? Then a Yamdoot replied that once such an incident had happened, seeing which my heart ached.
One day a king named Hans went out hunting and got lost in the forest path. While wandering, the king reached the border of another king. There was a ruler named Hema and he treated his neighboring king with great respect. On the same day, King Hema’s wife gave birth to a son.
Astrologers, looking at the planets and constellations of the newborn child, predicted that he would die within four days of the marriage. Then the king ordered that this child should be kept as a celibate in a secret cave on the banks of Yamuna, where no one could come. But the provisions of law approved something else.
Coincidentally, King Hans’s daughter wandered into that cave on the banks of Yamuna and there she saw the king’s son. That prince also liked the girl and both of them got married to Gandharva. The king’s son died four days after the marriage. Seeing the death of her husband the princess started crying loudly. Then Yamdoot said that his heart ached after hearing the lamentation of the newly married woman. After listening to all the things, Yamraj said what to do, this is the rule of law and we will have to do this work while living within the decorum.
Yamraj told the solution
After this the Yamdoots asked Yamraj, O Maharaj! Is there any solution by which untimely death can be avoided? Then Yamraj said that on the day of Dhanteras, performing puja with rituals and donating lamps does not lead to untimely death. Because of this incident, Lord Dhanvantari and Mother Lakshmi are worshiped on the day of Dhanteras and there is a tradition of donating lamps.
