Jaipur : Medical studies are being started in Hindi medium this year in two medical colleges of Rajasthan. These two medical colleges are Dr. Sampurnanand Medical College of Jodhpur and Barmer Medical College of Barmer which is affiliated to Marwar Medical University. In both these colleges, studies in Hindi have been started from the session of 2024-25. On September 14 this year, on Hindi Day, it was announced that medical education would be conducted in Hindi, after which Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma directed to start it in these two colleges from this session itself. The Bhajanlal government had also included a proposal in this regard in its first budget.
Before Rajasthan, the decision was taken to teach medical education in Hindi in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Now, after the encouraging response to this initiative in the neighboring state of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan has also decided to start it.
Got inspiration from Madhya Pradesh
In Madhya Pradesh, the program providing the option of medical studies in Hindi was started in the year 2022. Madhya Pradesh is the first state in the country to do this. Good results emerged from this.
In the new session of medical colleges in Madhya Pradesh, about 30% students have opted to study in Hindi. After the positive response received from Madhya Pradesh, states like Rajasthan, Bihar and Chhattisgarh have also shown interest in providing education in Hindi.
Need for medical education in Hindi medium
Principal of Kota Medical College, Dr. Sangeeta Saxena has welcomed this initiative. He said, “A committee of doctors from Marwar Health University went to Bhopal and conducted a study which showed that conducting studies in Hindi can be very useful.”
“Children who come from rural areas find it difficult to talk and read books in English. When they suddenly come to college and are taught in English and the examinations are conducted in English, it demoralizes them. “I am not against it, but we want to provide facilities to all our promising students coming from rural areas who currently face some difficulties.”

Medical students in Kota have also welcomed this initiative. A student said, “Students who have not got the facility to study in English medium in schools face a lot of problems in higher education. If medical studies are done in Hindi medium then it will be very easy for them and they will be able to get the same benefits as those who study in English medium.” People get it and won’t have to study English.”
There were many challenges in starting medical education in Hindi in Madhya Pradesh. The biggest challenge among these is to write difficult medical terminology in Hindi and to provide text books in Hindi.
Madhya Pradesh had translated Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology text book into Hindi for first year medical students in October 2022. Atal Bihari Vajpayee Hindi University, Bhopal has been entrusted with the work of translation of medical textbooks.
At present only first and second year students have Hindi medical textbook. But officials hope that other text books will be ready soon.
Dr. Sangeeta Saxena said, “Even in the Hindi textbooks that have come out recently, many words are not written correctly. But in the future, these will be improved and a dictionary of medical terms is being prepared.”
