Tokyo, November 13 (IANS). The nuclear reactor of Japan’s Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant restarted. Japan’s Tohoku Electric Power Company said on Wednesday that the reactor of Unit-2 of the nuclear power plant has been restarted. Due to technical problem it had to be closed temporarily.
According to news agency Xinhua, this reactor was restarted on October 29. The reaction was started for the first time since the 2011 earthquake but had to be stopped due to technical glitches earlier this month.
According to the company, the cause of the problem in this reactor was a loose nut in the piping system. After completing the inspection, the reactor was restarted at 9 am local time on Wednesday.
The company plans to resume power generation by November 19 and begin full-scale commercial operations in December.
The Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant was damaged by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in 2011. Due to this, the external power supply of the plant was stopped and due to the flood, the underground facility also came to a standstill.
The reactor was inspected in February 2020 under strict safety standards following the Fukushima crisis and received local consent to resume operations.
The Japanese government is pushing to restart the reactor for energy security. However, safety concerns about nuclear energy remain among the people.
