Pakistan again took a U-turn regarding the coach, Aaqib Javed became the interim coach till the Champions Trophy.

Lahore, November 18 (IANS). Former Pakistani fast bowler Aaqib Javed has been appointed as the new head coach of the Pakistani team for limited overs cricket. He will remain the interim coach of Pakistan till Champions Trophy 2025. Pakistan Cricket Board gave this information on Monday.

The board issued a statement saying that Javed will also continue to work as a selector. In such a situation, he will have to handle double responsibility. Aaqib played 22 Tests and 163 ODI matches for Pakistan during his international career. He was also a member of the Pakistan team that won the 1992 ODI World Cup. His previous coaching experience has been as the head coach and director of cricket operations for Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) from 2016 to 2024, where he won two consecutive titles.

He also worked as the fast bowling coach of Sri Lanka for some time and had previously held a similar role in the Pakistan team. Aaqib also helped in coaching the Afghanistan team and served as the head coach of the UAE from 2012 to 2016.

He also worked as the fast bowling coach of Sri Lanka for some time and had previously held a similar role in the Pakistan team. Apart from this, Aaqib also worked with the Afghanistan team and was also associated as the head coach of UAE from 2012 to 2016.

The position of white-haired head coach for the Pakistan men’s team was vacant following the resignation of Gary Kirsten ahead of the Australia tour. Red ball head coach Jason Gillespie coached the white ball team in Australia, where Pakistan won the ODI series and are currently trailing the three-match T20I series 0-2.

The PCB said Gillespie will now join the squad for Pakistan’s upcoming two-match Test series in South Africa. This new coaching reshuffle means that the white-ball coach will have a say in the selection of Pakistan’s limited-overs teams, which is not currently the case with the red-ball head coach.

Aaqib’s first assignment as Pakistan’s new limited overs coach will be the tour of Zimbabwe from November 24 to December 5, in which he will play a series of three ODIs and three T20 Internationals. With this, the team’s busy limited overs schedule will also begin.

Then, many matches will also be played in South Africa from 10 to 22 December. Ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Pakistan will host the ODI tri-series between New Zealand and South Africa from February 8 to 14.
