Kota : The number of Indian students doing MBBS from abroad is continuously increasing. But they are not able to qualify the Foreign Medical Graduation Examination (FMGE) which is conducted before coming to the country and getting temporary and permanent registration in the National or State Medical Council. In the last three years, the number of foreign medical graduates giving FMGE has increased from 40 thousand to 60 thousand. In comparison, the success rate in qualifying this exam has fallen from 24 percent to only 16 percent. That means about 80 percent students are not able to clear FMGE. In such a situation, they are not able to come to the country and start medical profession.
Education expert Dev Sharma said that thousands of Indian students return home after completing MBBS course from countries like Russia, Ukraine, China, Armenia and Georgia. For such medical graduates, Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) is conducted by the National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences (NBEMS). After qualifying this, these students are declared eligible for temporary/permanent registration in the National/State Medical Council. This registration is mandatory before starting medical services in the country.
Last year only 16 percent qualified
In the year 2023, more than 60 thousand students doing MBBS from abroad appeared in FMGE. Out of these, only about 10 thousand students qualified. The students who qualified were only 16%.
