PM Modi appeals to modernize police, align with vision of ‘developed India’

New Delhi, December 1 (IANS). Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged the police to focus on modernization and align with the vision of ‘developed India’. He called for the use of technology to reduce the workload on policemen.

PM Modi participated in the 59th All India Conference of Directors General/Inspectors General of Police in Bhubaneswar on 30 November and 1 December 2024. In the concluding session, PM Modi distributed President’s Police Medals for distinguished service to Intelligence Bureau officers. In his concluding remarks, he said that national and international dimensions of security challenges were widely discussed during the conference and expressed satisfaction at the response strategies that emerged from the discussions.

The Prime Minister also expressed concern over digital fraud, cyber crime and the potential threats posed by AI technology, especially the ability of deepfakes to disrupt social and family relationships.

He appealed to the police officers to utilize the country’s strengths of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and ‘Aspirational India’ to convert the challenge into an opportunity.

For smart policing, PM Modi appealed to the police to use strategies, work cautiously, be ready for change and maintain credibility and transparency.

Praising the initiatives taken in urban policing, PM Modi suggested that each initiative should be brought together and fully implemented in 100 cities of the country. He also called for the use of technology to reduce the workload of constables and suggested that police stations should be made the focal point of resource allocation.

PM Modi also suggested considering organizing a National Police Hackathon. He also highlighted the need to focus on port security and prepare a future action plan for the same.

Recalling the unique contribution of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in the Home Ministry, the Prime Minister said that all the security establishments from the Home Ministry to the police station level, while paying tribute to his 150th birth anniversary next year, appealed to work on any such aspect which would help the police. The company’s image, professional attitude and capabilities should improve.

He also urged the police to modernize and align themselves with the vision of ‘Developed India’.

During the conference, existing and emerging challenges to national security including terrorism, left-wing extremism, cyber crime, economic security, immigration, coastal security and drug trafficking were discussed in depth. Strategies to counter emerging security concerns along the border with Bangladesh and Myanmar were also discussed.

Additionally, the implementation of the three newly enacted crime laws, initiatives and best practices in policing as well as the security situation in the neighborhood were reviewed. PM Modi gave valuable information and presented a roadmap for the future.

The DG-IG conference was also attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, National Security Advisor, Union Minister of State for Home and Union Home Secretary.
