Seoul, December 10 (IANS) The head of the South Korean military’s Special Warfare Command said on Tuesday that President Yun Sook Yeol had ordered him to evacuate lawmakers from the National Assembly Building during a martial law operation last week.
Lieutenant General Kwak Jong-kyun made this claim during the meeting of the Parliamentary Defense Committee. He said Yoon called him on a secure phone.
Kwak also told Park Beom-kyu of the main opposition Democratic Party that he had learned about Yoon’s plan to impose martial law two days earlier on December 1, Yonhap news agency reported.
However, Park said, “Commander Kwak did not tell the prosecution that he already knew everything.” He said Kwok did not testify because those involved in the martial law operation had already decided what to say.
South Korea is going through a period of political turmoil. Actually, President Yoon Sook Yeol announced emergency martial law on Tuesday (03 December) night, but it was repealed after the Parliament voted against it on Wednesday.
Martial law remained in force only for a few hours. However, the martial law that was implemented for a few hours shook the politics of the country. Yun’s move to impose martial law was criticized by opposition parties as well as the ruling People’s Power Party.
