Ranchi, December 10 (IANS). Rabindranath Mahato has been unanimously elected Speaker of the Jharkhand Assembly for the second time. A total of seven sets of proposals were presented to the Assembly Secretary by the party and opposition regarding the election of the Speaker by the scheduled time on Tuesday. Rabindranath Mahato’s name was proposed in all the sets. Protem Speaker Stephen Marandi informed the House about all these proposals and announced his election unanimously. After this, Chief Minister Hemant Soren and senior BJP MLA Babulal Marandi respectfully appointed him to the Speaker’s chair.
CM Soren, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Radhakrishna Kishore, senior BJP MLA Babulal Marandi, RJD’s Suresh Paswan, CPI ML’s Arup Chatterjee, JDU’s Saryu Rai, LJP’s Janardan Paswan, AJSU Party’s Nirmal Mahato and JLKM’s Jairam Mahato made their statements. Congratulated the newly elected Speaker. Everyone appreciated the personality of Rabindranath Mahato. Leaders of opposition parties expressed hope that the Speaker will look at all parties, both opposition and parties, with equal vision. The Speaker also expressed his gratitude for his election and the support given to him by the members of the House.
65-year-old Rabindranath Mahato has reached the House after winning from Nala assembly seat of Santhal Pargana division for the third consecutive time. It has been a myth in Jharkhand that no public representative can win the assembly elections while holding the post of Speaker. Rabindranath Mahato has become the first public representative to break this myth. He had won from Nala assembly seat for the first time in 2005, but after that he had to face defeat in 2009. After this, he won consecutively in the elections of 2014, 2019 and 2024 as a candidate of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha.
Rabindranath Mahato is a resident of Patanpur village under Bindapathar police station area of Jamtara district. He was born in this village on January 12, 1960. His father was a teacher of Golak Bihari Mahato Primary School, who died two days ago. Rabindranath Mahato obtained B.Sc. degree from Bhagalpur University, Bihar in the year 1982. According to the affidavit filed before the Election Commission during the assembly elections, his total assets are Rs 97 lakh 56 thousand. In the income tax return filed for the year 2024-25, he has declared his total income as Rs 10 lakh 57 thousand 600. Even in matters of litigation, his record is completely spotless. No case has been registered against him yet in any police station or court.
