New Delhi, December 5 (IANS). Another new DTH channel is going to be started in the country under PM e-Vidya Yojana. According to the Union Education Ministry, this channel has been designed for Indian sign language. Hearing-impaired students will benefit directly from this.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will launch PM e-Vidya’s DTH channel number-31 for Indian Sign Language (ISL) on December 6 in New Delhi.
According to the Ministry of Education, this new and important initiative being taken in the country supports the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The National Education Policy recommends promotion of Indian Sign Language to promote a more inclusive educational environment.
Para 4.22 of the NEP states that Indian Sign Language (ISL) will be standardized across the country. Along with this, it has also been said in the National Education Policy that the content of national and various state courses will be prepared for hearing-impaired students. Local sign languages will be respected and taught where possible and relevant.
A special PM e-Vidya channel dedicated to promoting Indian Sign Language has been envisioned to promote ISL as a language as well as a school subject. Its direct benefit will be that a large population will be able to get the facility to learn the language. The channel will also provide career guidance to school children, teachers, teacher trainers and other stakeholders.
Apart from this, the channel will disseminate learning material in the area of skill training, mental health, class-wise curriculum material, communication skills. This will promote sign language as a subject like oral languages like Hindi, English etc.
Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Minister of State for Education Jayant Choudhary will also participate in the program. The program will be attended by hearing-impaired (HI) children, hearing-impaired achievers, special teachers, ISL certified interpreters and organizations working towards mainstreaming the hearing-impaired community.
