Suicide cases have increased in Rajasthan, frightening figures have come to light in the last few years

Jaipur : Today (September 10) is World Suicide Prevention Day. The World Health Organization celebrates this day every year to spread awareness about suicide. This day was first organized in the year 2003. Its purpose is to focus on the issue of suicide, remove the feeling of stigma in the society regarding it and spread awareness among organizations, governments, and the public. The name of Kota city of Rajasthan often remains in the headlines in cases of suicide. The problem of students committing suicide in Kota has become a national issue. But apart from these, incidents of suicide keep happening in Rajasthan. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) releases data on suicides occurring in the country every year. NCRB gave its latest report in December last year.

Maharashtra has the highest number of suicides in the country

It was told in the report that in the year 2022, 1 lakh 70 thousand 924 people committed suicide in India. Maharashtra had the highest number of suicides at 22,746. Tamil Nadu (19834) was at second place and Madhya Pradesh (15386) was at third place. But Sikkim was at the top in terms of percentage of suicides according to population. In Sikkim, 43.1 percent people per one lakh population committed suicide. In Sikkim, 293 people committed suicide in the year 2022. Andaman and Nicobar (42.8 percent) was at second place and Puducherry (29.7 percent) was at third place.

In the final report of NCRB, it was told that 5343 people had committed suicide in Rajasthan in the year 2022. In this way, 14 people committed suicide every day in Rajasthan. In terms of number of suicides, Rajasthan was ranked 13th in the country. The suicide rate in Rajasthan was 6.6 percent.

However, the situation in Rajasthan was better than most states in the country. Rajasthan was among the 12 states where the number of suicide cases had declined steadily. In the year 2021, 5593 people committed suicide in Rajasthan, and before that in the year 2020, 5658 people committed suicide. In contrast, the total number of suicides increased at the national level. But in Rajasthan, more than 5,000 people are dying by suicide every year in the last few years. In the year 2020, for the first time, the number of deaths due to suicide crossed 5,000.

14 students have committed suicide in Kota since January

There have been incidents of suicide in Rajasthan this year too, but their total number is not clear yet. But figures of student suicides have been coming in Kota. Last week (September 4), a coaching student committed suicide there. This was the 14th case of a student suicide in Kota from January to September this year. But the latest report of NCRB of last year shows that Maharashtra (1746) was at number one in the case of student suicide in the country, Tamil Nadu (1416) at number two, Madhya Pradesh (1340) at number three, Uttar Pradesh (1060) at number four and Jharkhand (824) at number five. Of all the students who committed suicide in the year 2022 in the country, 49 percent, that is, almost half of the students were from these 5 states. In terms of student suicide, Rajasthan is at the 10th position in the list.
